Talking about Time
When describing time in German, expressions such as die Minute, die Stunde, die Viertelstunde, and die Halbzeit are common for specifying exactly how much time is involved. If you want to say what time it is, start with es ist.
Examples:
- Es ist fünf nach zwei (It's five past two)
- Es ist fünf vor zwei (It's five to two)
- Wie spät ist es? (What time is it?)
- Es ist eine Uhr drölf (slang or humorous way to say an imaginary time)
Specifying Dates
To talk about the date, use das Datum. To refer to longer periods, use die Dekade (a decade), das Jahrzehnt (also decade, but more commonly used), and das Jahrhundert (a century).
Examples:
- Welches Datum haben wir heute? (What is the date today?)
- Wir leben im 21. Jahrhundert.
- Die 90er waren eine interessante Dekade.
Days, Months, and Years
Days of the week and months are essential when talking about appointments, schedules, or history.
Days of the week:
- der Montag, der Dienstag, der Mittwoch, der Donnerstag, der Freitag, der Samstag, der Sonntag
To talk about “on Monday,” use am Montag, and similarly for other days.
Example:
- Am Freitag gehe ich ins Kino.
Months:
- der Januar, der März, der Mai, der Juni, der Juli, der September, der Oktober
To talk about something happening in a certain month, use im + [month].
Example:
- Im Oktober beginnt der Herbst.
Years
To mention the year, simply use the number:
- im Jahr 2023 (in the year 2023)
- Juli 2022 war sehr heiß.
By combining time, date, and day expressions, you can discuss anything from a short appointment to historical events.
